No-Mow Mix Test Plot

In June 2025, Scenic River Prairie started a special planting area called a “no-mow” test plot. This means we planted seeds that can grow without needing to be cut like a regular lawn. We created this area to see how well these plants grow in real life and to share what we learn with others.

From June 2025 through April 2026, we watched how the plants changed over time—from tiny sprouts to growing through the seasons and coming back after winter.

Purpose and Objectives

What are we trying to learn?
We want to understand:

  • How well the no-mow plants get started
  • How they look and grow during different seasons
  • If they can survive the winter
  • What kind of care they might need
  • How we can share what we learn with the public

This project helps us take good care of the land while also teaching others in a simple, honest way.

How We Did It

The test plot was set up in June 2025 and planted with a special “no-mow” seed mix. These plants were chosen because they can grow on their own and don’t need much cutting or care.

What We Watched

After planting, we mostly let nature take over. We didn’t add extra treatments or try to “fix” anything—we wanted to see how the plants would grow all by themselves.

We kept track of what happened by checking on the plot regularly and taking photos along the way. This helps us see how the plants change over time and understand how they grow in real-life conditions.

Results

June 2025 — Just Planted
Right after we planted the seeds, the area mostly looked like bare dirt. This is normal when plants are just getting started.

July 2025 — First Signs of Growth
We started to see tiny green plants popping up. They didn’t grow evenly yet, and some spots had more than others—that’s normal in the early stages.

August 2025 — Growing Strong
By late summer, many more plants had grown in. The area looked fuller and healthier as the plants took advantage of the warm weather.

October 2025 — Changing for Fall
In the fall, the plot started to look more like a natural meadow instead of a lawn. The plants weren’t all the same height or shape, which is a good sign of a natural system.

April 2026 — After Winter
In spring, we saw plants coming back to life after winter. This shows the mix can survive the cold and keep growing year after year.

Observations

What have we seen so far?
So far, the plants are growing just like we expected. At first, some areas looked patchy or uneven—but that’s normal for natural plantings. It doesn’t mean anything is wrong.

Over time, we’ve seen the area change from bare soil to a mix of growing plants. After winter, many of the plants started growing again, which is a great sign.

We’ll keep watching to see how thick the plants get and how much care they need as they grow.

Stewardship

Why this matters
At Scenic River Prairie, we believe in learning by doing. Instead of just talking about ideas, we plant, observe, and share what really happens.

This no-mow test plot is an early step, but an important one. It shows that these kinds of plantings can work and may be useful in other parts of the prairie in the future.

As the plants continue to grow, we’ll keep learning and sharing what we discover along the way.
